Direct observation of the effect of oxygen on developing vessels: preliminary report.

چکیده
IN previous papers it has been shown that high concentrations of oxygen are able to exert on growing retinal vessels a peculiar type of constrictor action which progresses gradually to complete obliteration of the ingrowing complexes (Ashton and others, 1953, 1954). The possible factors involved in this mechanism have already been fully discussed; it is the purpose of this paper to report preliminary experiments designed to elucidate the problem further. In order to study the process of vaso-obliteration and to correlate the findings in injected retinae with events in life, we have utilized a new limbal window technique, devised by one-of us (C.C.), which permits direct observation of the living retinal vessels. To determine whether oxygen has a similar action on growing vessels in the adult animal we have investigated the effect of hyperoxia on vascularization of the rabbit cornea and rabbit ear chamber; indirect evidence for its action on vessels in the embryo has been sought in a few experiments on hens' eggs. The methods employed together with the results obtained will be reported under the appropriate headings.

This study aimed at comparing the impact of two types of teacher feedback on Iranian EFL learners’ writing ability and their verb tense consistency in L2 writing. Following the administration of a standardized language proficiency test (Preliminary English Test), sixty-two participants were selected and were randomly assigned to the control (direct-only correction) and experimental (direct meta...
متن کاملThe effect of hypothyroidism on the trigeminal calcitonin gene-related peptide containing motoneurons: an immunohisto-chemical study in late neonatal life
CGRP, which coexists with acetylcholine in trigeminal motoneurons, could be one of the regulatory anterograde factors responsible for the enhanced expression of AChR subunits in neuromuscular junction. It has been also shown that low level of thyroid hormone plasma concentration has influence on the transitional development of muscle fibers and related motoneurons through a sever reduction in A...

متن کاملP92: Investigation of the Role of Glucocorticoid Receptors on the Anxiety in Mice: A Preliminary Report
Some studies suggested that glucocorticoid receptors activities can modulate fear and anxiety. According to that, the purpose of this research is to assess the modulatory effect of glucocorticoid receptors on the anxiety assessed in plus maze. In this research mice with medium weight of 20-25 g were used. The male and female animals separately sorted in two groups as control and experiment rand...
متن کاملStudies on developing retinal vessels. II. Influence of retinal detachment on oxygen vaso-obliteration.
BY direct observation, it was recently shown that the obliterative action of high concentrations of oxygen on the ingrowing vessels of the kitten retina may be prevented by retinal detachment (Ashton and Cook, 1954). The obliterated vessels re-open as soon as detachment begins, indicating that close apposition between retina and choroid is necessary for the obliterative phenomenon to operate. S...
